Chronology? Chronometer? It's all about the study and measurement of processes, sequences and events, cause and effect. In other words, that abstract and enigmatic construct we call time. Chronos was the God of Time as personified in the pre-Socratic philosophies of ancient Greece, and he was viewed as a destructive and all-devouring force. In Greco-Roman murals he was portrayed in human form turning the Wheel of the Zodiac. All this fits neatly together if we view time as an endlessly turning wheel, inexorably grinding every last grain of order in the universe into the dust of chaos, each grain evaporating in a brief flash of light.
