Thorpe Cloud at sunset

Thorpe Cloud is a limestone reef knoll which was laid down on an ancient sea floor under a shallow tropical sea. Other reef knolls in the Peak District National Park are the apron reefs of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill further north. This view was captured on a late summer evening when the warm light of the setting sun grazed the hillsides before it sank from view. The area is in the ownership of the National Trust South Peak estate and in 2010 it was used as a location in the film ‘Robin Hood’ starring Russell Crowe. Such a beautiful landscape would certainly have been appreciated by Robin and his Merry Men!
