The way of the spring and the autumn moon

The inspiration for this fine-art image comes from musing over a photo taken at the Jiayu Pass Fortress in Jaiuyuguan, a city built on the ancient silk road, in the Gansu Corridor, northwestern China. The site is steeped in history and legend and the feeling of timelessness when visiting the fort is palpable. The aim of this image is to take us through the archways into this other world where time and space are out of kilter. Furthermore there is, as there inevitably always is, a choice to be made. As revealed in the buddhist teachings there are many paths on the way to the enlightenment that lies beyond the far wall. Do we take the path of the Spring moon with its intimations of renewal, or the way of the Autumn moon with its whisper of closure? Sometimes, alas, the choice is made for us.
