The original collage (a mix of coloured papers and photographs subjected to extreme heat) from which this abstract image stems has long since disappeared under a welter of editing sessions in Photoshop. The possibility of manipulating time has long intrigued the dreamers amongst us and the example that comes most immediately to mind is ‘The Time Machine’ by H. G. Wells. Could such a machine ever be constructed that would ratchet time forwards or backwards like clockwork? If time is like an endlessly turning wheel then maybe some as yet unknown mechanism could be induced to accelerate or decelerate its relentless tick; maybe even freeze it, making past, present and future equally accessible. Is the surreal, wheel-like structure in the image such a machine? We can always dream. Meanwhile this peculiar construct ‘Time’ continues its implacable journey to whatever lies beyond the limits of our understanding.
