The magnificent Chongsheng Temple is part of a vast complex of buildings which includes the iconic Three Pagodas, perhaps the most well recognised buildings in Dali, Yunnan Province, southern China.  It was renowned as the ‘Capital of Buddhism’ and was the largest buddhist temple in southeast Asia.  Originally built in the 9th century it was the royal temple of the Kingdom of Dali and boasted 891 rooms.  The temple suffered much damage from wars and earthquakes over the years and the temple described in this image was rebuilt as recently as 2005, only a year before this photo was taken.  Fully restored it is now regarded as one of the most attractive temples in modern China.  Certainly a lavish amount of ‘no expense spared’ care has gone into this complex of buildings and it does look spectacular set against the backdrop of the mountain.  On this particular day the rain had set in and the mountain was draped in heavy cloud.  This, however, had the fortuitous effect of making the temple stand out even more dramatically from its surroundings.
