Original photo taken while cruising the Li River (Li Jiang) between Guilin and Yangshuo in the Guangxi Province, South China.  This 86 kilometre stretch of waterway runs through the most spectacular karst scenery, providing the kind of landscape most associated with iconic images of China.  Its well up there with The Great Wall and The Forbidden City.  On this day the weather was dreary and unsettled, and the karst peaks appeared through the mists like shadowy giants, lending them a foreboding, almost threatening aspect.  Passing by the cruise ship was the little bamboo raft of the image title, carrying a small group of sightseers, umbrellas up, braving the cold, damp weather and the choppy water.  Contrast has been augmented and detail suppressed to dramatise the image and give it a deliberately painterly look.
