A Perilous Contagion
My process of heat-blasting photographic emulsion creates really great surface patterns and textures which can be developed in all manner of ways. Occasionally my pyromania gets the better of me and I burn all the way through the photograph, producing holes with charred edges surrounded by colourful blisters.
That was a great starting point for this particular image where the holes, after much editing, appeared as vesicles erupting and sending out filaments of contagion into the surrounding textures.
This is the surreal thing; you have a starting point but you have no idea where it might lead you. Just follow the flow and let your subconscious mind take the lead. Not a bad definition of surrealism.
