    The original file, captured on a Nikon D200 in 2006, shows a solitary boat making its lonely way across Kunming Lake in the Emperor's Summer Palace gardens, Beijing. The day was very dull and dreary, most colours being bleached back by the heavily polluted air, a frequent feature of Beijing nowadays. A combination of dust from the desert to the north and thick fumes from the permanently heavy city traffic creates this fog. On a sunny day the sky might have achieved a dull yellow! In spite of coming from a full-colour file the image is much more akin to a monochrome touched by a hint of sepia. This was further enhanced by a light desaturation in Photoshop to promote a feeling of isolation and solitude.  Those travellers must feel lonely indeed on that chilly water,
