Shelter from the rain

Photograph taken in Dali Ancient City, Yunnan Province, China. This site can be dated back to the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and was likely founded in the 1380s. It is a major historical site in China, as well as being increasingly popular as a venue for backpackers and tourists, and it is bordered on the east by Erhai Lake and in the west by the Cangshan Mountain. This image shows one of the gates into the old city with the busy open market beyond. It was raining continually on that day and many locals, umbrellas up, had sought shelter under the substantial archway. Black and white, rather than colour, ideally suited this scene, bringing out the contrasts in light and shade caused by the now glistening wet surfaces. A charming and intimate moment captured for eternity.
