Footprints in the sand

China, 2006, near Dunhuang, the City of the Sands, late afternoon light. The original photograph was taken on a Nikon D200 at the Mingsha Sand Dunes on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, one of the world’s largest deserts. Marco Polo referred to these sands as the ‘rumbling sands’ on account of the drumming sound they give out when the wind blows. It is truly a place of great solitude and one can only wonder to whom these footprints belong and to what lonely place they were heading in this vast desert wilderness.
